Blood Rock - All Races

100 Mile & 50 Mile Endurance Trail Races

50K & 25K Southeastern Trail Series Races

WE are bringing back the 100, IF!

“IF” we have 75 or more runners register for the 100 by October 1st.

“IF” Our application to use the trails in the Belcher Tract is approved by Oak Mountain State Park.

Even through the Blood Rock races always had more than 300 runners in the four races, due to the extreme difficulty of the 100, we never had enough hundred milers to justify asking volunteers to sit in aid stations for up to 48 hours. After getting many requests not to cancel the 100 in our 2023 survey, we came up with this option that’s fair to all.

Pre-register for the 100

What the means: If you would like to run the 100, pre-register now. No registration fee will be charged at this time. When the number of runners signed up for the 100 reached 75, and we have approval of the updated 50 mile loop, we will move pre-registered runners to registered runners, The Blood Rock 100 will happen!

We are 99% sure we will be allowed to use sections of the new Belcher Tract in the Blood Rock races this year. The 50 mile course map below shows the new course. Should our event application not be accepted, preventing us from using trails in the Belcher Track, we will cancel the 100 mile option immediately. I don’t think this will be a concern. As stated before, If we have not reached 75 runners, or if the permit has not been approved for us to use the Belcher Tract by October 1st, 2024 we will cancel the BR 100.

One other new item for the 2024, will use SPOT Trackers to provide live tracking for all 100 and 50 mile runners. We used them at the Southern States 200 to keep track of runners and loved it. The trackers allow each runner’s crew and the aid station volunteers to know where every runner is at all times during the race. It also allows the race staff to go back an look at each runners track throughout the race. “Better not cut!”

A Short Exposé on the Blood Rock Sections on the Belcher Track.

The new 50-mile loop is going to make some significant changes to the character of the Blood Rock Race. Yes, it’s still going to be tough! All those brutal backcountry climbs are still in the race. We are even adding a climb, the “Crack-in-the-Wall Climb.” However, for 100 milers, we are removing the entire third lap. That means only two Barkley’s, two Topless Hill climbs, and two runs along the East Ridge Trail. The other, and perhaps most significant, is the addition of several Belcher Road Sections.

Now, understand, Belcher Rd is a 6 mile long gravel road running the length of the Belcher Track. Some sections are almost totally flat, especially at the bottom along the railroad tracks by Hwy 11. There are some long, gentle downhill sections and some steep uphill and downhill. There is nothing on the road I can’t drive in my 2-wheel drive F150. The road is much like the red bike road but better maintained. Like the bike road, cars are not allowed.

What this road does is give access to the beautiful lakes in the Belcher Trace. Runners will first reach Belcher Road at the top of the Crack-in-the-Wall Climb. There runners will head southwest and pass along the shore of Catfish Lake. We call it Summit Lake since it sits on the crest of the ridge. There is on old spring fed quarry lake. After about a mile on the road, runners will drop down the Old Quarry Trail and back up to the Eagle Nest Ridge before returning to Belcher Rd.

After a shot, gentle climb you will reach Belcher for a ½ mile descent to Demopolis Lake. Runners will circle around this, the largest of the three lakes, and head back to Kings Chair. From there you will head down the old Blood Rock route into the backcountry. At the sunken road, runners will turn left and pass by the “Grotto.” This is an amazing pool fed by a perpetual waterfall and spring. Have your camera ready.

From there, runners will make their way along an abandoned road over to Belcher Lake. This is the lake just below Kings Chair. We plan to have the Blecher Lake Aid Station on the grassy area extending out into the lake. After the aid station you will continue east onto another long-abandoned road for a 3.5-mile loop before returning to the Belcher Aid Station. Oh, did I mention “la petite Barkley.” You will know when you find it.

After the second trip to the Belcher Aid Station, runners will follow Belcher Rd just over a mile, mostly downhill to, and along the RR tracks to a right turn heading back to the mountain and everyone’s favorite climb the not-so-petite Barkley. Runners will stay on the old Blood Rock course to the descent of the “East Face Traverse” AKA, the Old Wagon Rd. At the bottom of the traverse continue straight ahead along a single-track trail for about ½ mile and rejoin Belcher just before the Trail Station.

After the aid station runners head back along the sunken road to the “Topless Climb” and the Topless Rock Face. Make your way over the ridge and you are headed back to Redbud Pavilion on the old Blood Rock Course.

I highly recommend downloading the GPX file and taking a tour of the new course. By the end of May, the entire course should be cleaned off ready for runners. Most is ready now including the Crack-in-the-Wall climb and the Quarry Trial.

About the 2024 Blood Rock Races

All Blood Rock races are Cupless

We have encouraged runners to bring their own cups is past year. This year we are officially Cupless. IF you intend to drink cokes, sprite or Mountain Dew, or water at aid stations, you will need your own cup. (Or something to drink out of.) We are no longer providing cold drink cups. We will have insulated cups for hot drinks and soup. At the Lake Martin 100, 50 and 27 each year we totally fill a commercial dumpster provided by Russell Lands just for the race. Lake Martin will also be “Cupless” next year.

Blood Rock 100 Mile

Blood Rock 100 will take place at Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama’s largest State Park, with over 11,500 Acres. The race starts and ends at the Redbud Pavilion near the BMX track on Tranquility Rd. The 100 Mile Race is 102.3 miles in length with 18,564 ft. of elevation gain. The hundred will start at 12:00 Noon Friday. Aid stations distances range from 5 to 7 miles apart. The Cutoff for the 100 Mile Race will be 44 Hours. The 100 course is 2 laps of the 51.18 mile course. Due to the extremely difficult and remote nature of the backcountry sections of Blood Rock, we must enforce mandatory cutoffs.

The Blood Rock 50 Mile

Blood Rock 50 Mile will take place at Oak Mountain State Park, The race starts and ends at the Redbud Pavilion near the BMX track on Tranquility Rd. The start will be at 7:00 AM Saturday. The course will be a single 51.18 loop of the curse. The 50 mile course will have 9,282 ft. of elevation gain. 50 Mile runners may choose to start Friday with the 100 milers.

Blood Rock 25K and 50K

The Blood Rock 25 & 50K races are Southeastern Trail Series Points races and take place at Oak Mountain State Park. Both races start and end at The Redbud Pavilion. Both races will start at 7:00 AM Saturday. The 50K course will be one full loop of the north end of the 50 mile loop. The 50L will include all sections of the Belcher Tract used in the 50 mile. The 25K courses are yet to be determined.

50K runners may have drop bags this year. Many 50K runners will not finish until after dark so be sure to pack a flashlight or headlamp in bag. It is likely that we will not be able to get your bag off the mountain by the time you finish. IF you want your drop bag, you may need to drive up to Terrace and Peavine Aid Stations to retrieve them, or come back Sunday morning early.

Blood Rock 50 mile, 50K and 25K runners are not allowed to have a pacer. Please do not ask!

All 100 mile and 50 mile Runners must download the GPX file (below) of the race course and have it on a navigation device to be carried with them during the race. The simplest option is to add the Gaia App to your phone and download the GPX file to your phone. Over the next few weeks we will add GPX files for the 50K and 25K.

This is a short video explaining how to download the Blood Rock GPX file above and load it into the GAIA App on you iPhone.

The Video Below shows just a few clips of 3 Blood Rock climbs

This is a short video from the 2018 Blood Rock Preview Run. The first clip is near the top of the Quarry Trails, originally know as the Far End Back Trail. The second video segment is the Ridge Section of the Far End Back Trail leading up to King’s Chair. The final segment is “Barkley.” This part of the video is on a more gentle section of the climb. We string 600 feet of rope up this hill for the race.

Brandon Kasteler’s Blood Rock Race Report

Mon, Dec 12, 6:18 AM, Brandon sent me an email saying: “Enjoyed it, as always. Boiled down my write up to one sentence this time!” Brandon’s '“reviews” of Blood Rock are always fascinating. I was a little disappointed in the report this time since he only wrote one sentence. See what you think.
